2.3 Eukaryotic Cells

Eukaryotic Cells
Cell membrane: Semi-permeable layer that controls the exchange of materials
Cytosol: Fluid portion of Cytoplasm
Nucleus: Contains DNA which controls the cells activities and mitosis, surrounded by nuclear envelope
Nucleolus: Site of production and assembly of ribosome components, located within nucleus,
Ribosome: Location of protein synthesis, made of RNA and proteins, assembled in cytoplasm, free floating in cytoplasm or attached to rough ER, can be arranged into group called polyribosome
Mitochondria: aerobic respiration that produces ATP from organic compounds
Golgi Apparatus: Group of saccules and folded membrane that sort, store and modify secretory products that are made in the ER, products are packed and moved into secretory vesicle to be moved to cell membrane for distribution
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: Made up of tubular canals attached to nuclear envelope, used to produce various molecules depending on the cell it is located such as with the synthesis and transport of lipids and steroids and metabolism of carbs
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: Ribosomes are attached, ribosomes make proteins that enter rough ER to be modified and sent to smooth ER then via vesicles to the Golgi body
Vacuoles: Store water and molecules
Lysosome: made by Golgi apparatus, contains hydrolytic enymes, digest contents of vesicle (macromolecules into simple molecules) to be distributed in cytoplasm. Digestion of old cell parts.
Chloroplasts (only in plant cells and photosynthetic protists): Photosynthesis occurs, chlorophyll in chloroplast absorbs light to convert to energy, and the grana converts it to ATP
Centrioles: Used in cell division
Peroxisome: Toxic substances broken down with peroxisome as a catalyst




Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells both have cell membrane, ribosomes, DNA and cytoplasm
